About AMMCO

Our Vision
Making the coastal and aquatic environment of Africa a threat-free home for the African manatee and other marine wildlife, while taking into account the best interests of the local people.
Our mission
Our mission is to contribute to the protection of the aquatic megafauna and their habitats in Central Africa by improving the scientific knowledge and involving fishermen and other stakeholders into sustainable fisheries and responsible watershed use.
OUR STRATEGIES

To achieve our mission, we identified four strategies including applied research and monitoring, integrated management, awareness and capacity building.
Research and monitoring
The research and monitoring conducted by AMMCO are not just meant to gain scientific knowledge of new species
Awareness
Because aquatic megafauna such as manatees receive only very little attention from public in Central Africa

Integrated management
AMMCO is conscious about the fact that species-based conservation alone is not sustainable for the long-term management

Capacity building
Aquatic research requires advanced skills and experience which are rarely taught in academic institutions of African developing

Where we work

AMMCO is located in Dizangue near the Lake Ossa Wildlife Reserve, an African manatee sanctuary in Cameroon. We have a second office on the coast at Batoké, Limbé in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. Over the past years, we have implemented several research and conservation projects along the Cameroon’s coastal line from Campo at the border with Equatorial Guinea to Bamusso at the border with Nigeria including the South, Littoral, and Southwest regions. AMMCO looks forward to extending its activities across and beyond West and Central Africa.
AFRICAN MARINE MAMMAL CONSERVATION ORGANIZATION
Initiated on December 17th, 2012, the African Marine Mammal Conservation Organization (AMMCO) received the official accreditation as a non-profit organization on May 8th, 2014 by the Prefecture of Sanaga-Marine in Edea under the administrative authorization N°: 086/RDA/C18/SAAJP.
AMMCO has been implementing research and conservation projects on the African manatee and other African Megafauna such as cetacean, sea turtles, sharks and rays along the coastline of Cameroon.
