Cameroon’s Minister of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development, Hele Pierre, has praised AMCO for its efforts in protecting marine biodiversity. This recognition came during the International Day for Biological Diversity celebration in Yaoundé, under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”

The Minister was especially impressed by the Siren App, a digital tool that is changing the way conservation is done in Cameroon and across Africa.

“I am pleased to see the amazing work AMCO is doing in marine conservation. I applaud the conservation efforts made so far through the Siren App,” said Minister Hele Pierre.

Cedrick Fogwan, AMCO’s Programmes Manager, added, “There is an abundance of marine life in Cameroon, and we are using the Siren App to help protect and conserve this biodiversity: humpback whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and rays.”

At the event, AMCO showcased Cameroon’s rich marine life through a lively exhibition. Using virtual reality headsets, the Minister explored underwater species and exclaimed with excitement, “I can see different species of fish!”

The Siren App is a citizen science platform that allows users to report sightings of endangered species, monitor habitat degradation, and receive real-time alerts on environmental threats. It gives conservationists and decision-makers access to reliable, on-the-ground data.

Another highlight was AMCO’s success in restoring Lake Ossa by tackling Salvinia molesta, an invasive aquatic plant threatening the lake’s ecosystem and the endangered African manatee.

“Fishermen and local communities were pleased with the efforts made to restore Lake Ossa,” Cedrick noted.

This year’s Biodiversity Day was more than a celebration. It was a call to action, showing that innovation, partnerships and community engagement are key to building a sustainable future. With tools like the Siren App, that future looks within reach.

The event brought together environmentalists, local leaders and government officials, all united in their commitment to safeguarding Cameroon’s natural heritage.
